Barbara E. "Barb" Schmidt

Barbara E. "Barb" Schmidt, 67, of Indianapolis, passed away peacefully on October 24, 2022, at her residence surrounded by her family after a courageous battle with glioblastoma. Barb was born on August 1, 1955, in Lincoln, Nebraska to the late Robert L. and Judith (Palmateer) Rawls.

Barb was a graduate of Villanova University, receiving her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1977. It was here that Barb met her husband. On May 21, 1977, on campus, Barb wed Robert John Schmidt. Barb worked as a registered nurse at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for 35 years before going on to work at the Rehabilitation Hospital of Indianapolis for an additional 10 years. A devoted and caring nurse, Barb retired on August 28, 2020.

Barb enjoyed traveling with her husband, Bob, to Hawaii and Siesta Key, Florida. She enjoyed reading, Hallmark movies, Christmas traditions, and shopping trips to Target. Above all, Barb had a servant’s heart and loved to be with her family, especially her beloved grandchildren. Family was of the utmost importance to her, and she will be deeply missed.

Along with her parents, Barb was preceded in death by her brother, Homer Rawls.

Survivors include her husband of 45 years, Robert John “Bob” Schmidt; daughters. Megan (Carlton) Simmons and Amy (Craig) Chestnut; grandchildren, Robert “Travis” Schmidt, Benjamin Chestnut, Derrick Simmons, Avery Simmons, Camden Simmons, Mac Chestnut, and Sloane Chestnut; sisters, Juliette “Julie” Rawls and Winnie Jackson; a host of friends and extended family members.

Barb’s Life Celebration® Visitation will be Tuesday, November 1, 2022, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM in the chapel at O’Riley – Branson Funeral Service & Crematory, 6107 South East Street, Indianapolis, Indiana 46227.
