Timothy Hayes

January 31, 1937 — November 14, 2016

Timothy Hayes passed away peacefully on November 14th among his very large and loving Irish clan. Born January 31, 1937, Tim was one of 6 children born to James and Gertrude Hayes. He attended St. Catherine Grade School and Cathedral High School.
He met his future bride Charleen “Cookie” O’Connor on December 1, 1957 at an Irish Baptism and they were married on May 14, 1960 . . and they were inseparable ever since.
Tim joined the Indianapolis Police Department in December, 1961, spending 22 years serving the citizens of Indianapolis as a beat cop, a court bailiff, a detective in the juvenile division and finished his career as an auto theft detective. He retired in January 1983. Following his retirement, Tim became an active partner in their family business, H & H Catering. In later years, “Public Relations” became more of a passion than frying chicken. Though never a handyman, he joined forces with his sons to form Indianapolis Lock and Safe.
He was an active member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and the Knights of Columbus, serving as the Grand Knight of Council #3660 from 1984 - 1985 and State Social Director and Executive Secretary for many years. He was active in Democrat politics with his lifelong confidante and brother in law, John C. Christ. He spent many years coaching football at St. Catherine Grade School with his best friend Big Mike McHugh, leading their teams to many city championships.
He passionately loved Notre Dame football and cherished being a season ticket holder, giving him the opportunity to share this love with his children and grandchildren. In more recent years, he especially cherished his time spent at his cottage on Lake Manitou, driving his pontoon.
