Michael "Mike the Barber" Smith, a beloved figure in the Southside community, passed away on September 15, 2024, at the age of 75. He was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on March 9, 1949, to the late Ralph & Marjorie Smith. Mike devoted over 56 years to his craft, earning him the affectionate nickname that resonated with so many who knew him.
A graduate of Southport High School in Indianapolis, Mike further honed his skills by attending Barber School, where his passion for the trade began. Throughout his fruitful career, he never knew a stranger, establishing meaningful connections with every client who sat in his chair. His dedication extended beyond his work; he notably enjoyed giving his time by providing haircuts to residents at local nursing homes, embodying his belief in "paying it forward" and supporting those less fortunate.
Family meant everything to Mike. He cherished vacationing with loved ones in the Great Smoky Mountains and savored precious moments gathered around the table for poker games with his buddies at home. His warmth and light were evident to all and made him an amazing husband, father, and grandfather. Mike’s love for his family was unparalleled, and he always prioritized their happiness and well-being.
An avid sports fan, Mike maintained a fervent following of Colts Football, often discussing game highlights and players with friends and family. Additionally, he relished spending time at their second home in Tennessee, where many treasured memories were made.
Mike is survived by his loving wife of 55 years; Diane Smith, Children; Michael J. Sabrina) Smith, Brad A. (Rebecca) Smith, and Scott (Tania) Smith, 14 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, and siblings; Linda Dunn & Ralph Smith.
Mike is preceded in death by his brothers: Richard Smith, Thomas Smith, and Philip Smith.
Mike Smith leaves behind a legacy of kindness and camaraderie that will be felt by all those whose lives he touched. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered for his generous spirit and unwavering dedication to his family and community.
In honor of Mike’s request, there will be no services.
