Phyllis Joan Matthews

Phyllis Joan Matthews, 83, a lifelong resident of Indianapolis, died on June 16, 2016. She was born on September 3, 1932 to Walter Glenn and Eleanora Bennett Foreman.

Phyllis graduated from Sacred Heart High School. She married Harold William Matthews, also of Indianapolis, on December 29, 1951. He preceded her in death.

Phyllis was a dedicated mother and grandmother. She is survived by children Harold William (“Bill”) Matthews Jr. (Karen), Barbara Rice (Greg), Thomas Matthews, Mark Matthews (Keena), Diane Bartlett, Gail Brown (Rodney), David Matthews and Amy Matthews; grandchildren Angie Conder (Chuck Williams), Christina Renollet (Howard), Victoria Bartlett (Jacob Anderson), Sam Brown, Zach Pingleton (Hannah) and Levi Pingleton; and great-grandchildren Lelan Lambert, Mason Renollet, Kayle Williams, Ayden Pingleton-Lee, Alana Pingleton-Lee, Weston Pingleton and Tovi Anderson.

She was active in St. Mark Catholic Church and participated in the church choir, quilting circle, and the Knights of Columbus Women’s Choir. Phyllis and Harold were also members of the Lucky Squares square dancing club in Indianapolis. They helped to host the National Square Dancing Convention in Indianapolis in 1999, and traveled to other national conventions as participants.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, June 24, 2016 at 10 a.m. in St. Mark Catholic Church, 535 E. Edgewood Avenue, Indianapolis, IN. Visitation will be Thursday, June 23, 2016 from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. in Daniel F. O’Riley Funeral Home, 6107 S. East St., (US Hwy 31S), Indianapolis, IN where morning prayers will be said on Friday at 9:30 a.m. prior to Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
