Robert E. Gilmore, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend passed away peacefully on November 19, 2024, in Indianapolis, Indiana, following a courageous 2 1/2 year battle with leukemia. He was surrounded by his loving family, who will forever hold dear the countless memories they shared together.
Bob was born on November 27, 1940, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to the late Eugene & Louise Gilmore. Bob was a proud graduate of Southport High School, class of 1958. He served his country honorably as a veteran of the United States Air Force. Bob's professional journey spanned over four decades, as he dedicated more than 20 years to maintenance at Otis Elevator and another 20 years with Duke Energy, embodying a strong work ethic that inspired those around him.
On March 11, 1966, Bob married the love of his life, embarking on a journey filled with love, laughter, and devotion. Together, they welcomed two sons, whom he adored deeply. Bob never missed a baseball, basketball, football game or wrestling match, while his boys were growing up, passionately coaching them in their sporting events, always proud of their achievements. His strong support extended to his grandchildren, whom he cheered on with great enthusiasm, demonstrating a profound commitment to his family's happiness.
Known for his warm and welcoming personality, Bob never knew a stranger. He cherished spending holidays surrounded by family and friends, always bringing joy and laughter to every gathering. A Jack of all trades, he had an innate ability to fix just about anything, further endearing him to those lucky enough to know him. Bob’s greatest joy came from the simple pleasures; weekends spent piling his grandchildren into the golf cart and heading to the clubhouse at Valle Vista Golf Course, where he loved to play golf at every opportunity.
Bob was also an avid sports fan, never missing a chance to watch his favorite teams compete on television. He had a rich history of involvement with the Jaycees and dedicated much of his time to volunteering with the Lions Club, weaving a thread of service into the fabric of his life.
Perhaps one of Bob’s proudest accomplishments was his heartfelt tradition of calling each family member on their birthday to sing to them, a gesture that perfectly captured his loving spirit. His interest in the lives of those around him was genuine, always eager to learn about each person's endeavors.
Bob is survived by his loving wife of 58 years; Vickie L. Gilmore, sons; Bob (Sandy) Gilmore & Scott (Leigh) Gilmore, grandchildren; Amber, Tyler, Tara, Amanda, Katie, Justin, Brooke, Jake, Ryan, & Zane, great-grandchildren; Jada, Harmony, Jack, Holden, Scarlet, Colt, Charlotte, Austin, and one more on the way. He is also survived by his sister; Mary Lou Rosenthal & sister-in-law; Christine Gilmore.
Bob is preceded in death by his brother; Thomas Gilmore & brother-in-law; Lowell Rosenthal.
