Angela Marie (Hoying) Schlegel

July 6, 1930 — January 21, 2023

Indianapolis

Angela Marie Hoying Schlegel, 92, has joined Louis for a polka in the sky.  Angie died peacefully at home on January 21, 2023.

Angie was born on July 6, 1930 in Youngstown --Ohio to Robert Anthony Hoying and Catherine (Driscoll) Hoying who are both deceased.  Angie was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Schlegel, brother James Hoying and grandson Cooper Jones.

Angie and Louis were married 60 years and had eight healthy children – Christine (Bret) Robinson, Martha (David) Jones, Kurt Schlegel, Paul (Marsha) Schlegel, Gerard (Eileen) Schlegel, Peter (Theresa) Schlegel, Mary (Mark) Bastable and Heidi Traylor. Angie had 14 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren, who all ABSOLUTELY adored her.  She is also survived by a sister, Mary Gunderman.

Angie graduated from nursing school in 1952 from Fairview Park Hospital in Cleveland.  Angie and Louis met on a blind date and married in 1952.  Louis and Angie started their very large family soon after and for 24 consecutive years had at least one irritable teenager living under their roof.  Angie and Louis lived in Cleveland, Ohio until 1967 when an opportunity in Indianapolis called.

Angie worked as a kindergarten assistant for many years at St. Roch Catholic School.  Angie found much joy in teaching the little ones to read.

Angie loved crocheting, sewing, competitive dishcloth knitting, playing bridge, St. Roch quilting club and going to lunch with her many friends.  Angie also loved spending time with her grandchildren.

Most of all, Angie had the faith of a million men.  Her Catholic faith and devotion to Mary was unshakable as she died with a rosary in her hand.

Special thanks to Kurt Schlegel who lovingly cared for her for many years. A big thank you to Mary Schlegel Bastable who eased her to the next life with such love, care and dignity. You both are appreciated deeply by your family.
