Charles L. “Charlie” Miller, 95, Indianapolis resident until his 1985 Florida retirement, passed away May 4, 2019 at Good Shepherd Hospice in Sebring, Florida. Mr. Miller was born January 1, 1924 in Decatur Township, Marion County, Indiana, to the late Louis and Dora (Henniger) Miller.
Charlie graduated from Decatur Central High School in 1942 and proudly served in the United States Army Air Corps as a 1st Lieutenant Pilot, and in the National Guard. He worked as an Engineer at Indiana Bell Telephone Company, retiring in 1982 with 34 years of service. Charlie and his wife, Florence, were members of and raised their family at St. Roch Catholic Church and School.
One to enjoy the outdoors, Charlie spent time camping, fishing and boating with his family through the years. He loved golf, only to begin playing at retirement, and then three times per week until the age of 95. He won a gold medal in golf at the Florida Senior Games at the age of 93. A true handyman, he could build or fix anything. He was strong and kind, gentle and loyal, fun and witty. Above all, Charlie was strongly devoted to God and his family, and will be fondly remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.
In addition to his parents, Charlie was preceded in death by his wife of 37 years, Florence (Kocher) Miller; daughter, Linda (Miller) Stahl; grandson, Todd Stahl.
Survivors include wife of 33 years, Yvette Miller; children, Don (Annie) Miller, Joyce (Ron) McGrew, Marcia (Bob) Reed, Tim (Deb) Miller, Wanda (Jim) Jarvis; 12 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
Family and friends will gather to celebrate Charlie’s life on Tuesday, May 28, 2019 from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Daniel F. O’Riley Funeral Home, 6107 South East Street, Indianapolis. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 29, 2019 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Roch Catholic Church, 3600 South Pennsylvania Street, Indianapolis. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be made to the charity of your choice in Charlie’s memory; envelopes will be provided at the funeral home.
