John W. Cherry

May 12, 1935 — June 30, 2022

John W. Cherry, 87, longtime southside Indianapolis resident, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family June 30, 2022. Mr. Cherry was born May 12, 1935, in Springfield, Ohio, to the late Charles C. and Leona (Ehl) Cherry.

John graduated from Catholic Central High School in Springfield where he met a cheerleader named Mary Ann (Hankel) who became the love of his life. He excelled in basketball and football being named Mr. Touchdown during his senior year. He attended Wittenberg, Dayton, and Miami University. John enjoyed a successful career with Chrysler Air Temp that brought the family to Indianapolis in 1971. He retired from Ferguson at the age of 65 and then worked in security at AT&T for the next 20 years, only retiring when his children insisted on it to keep him safe during the Pandemic. His work ethic was second to none and was an important trait that was passed down to each of his children. Growing up Catholic as a young boy, John was an altar boy who was elevated to a Master Server, a role in which he took great pride. His faith remained a very important and influential part of his life as a member, lector, and parish council member at St. Barnabas Catholic Church.

John always credited marrying Mary Ann as the best and most rewarding highlight of his life. They married on April 28, 1956 and celebrated 66 years of marriage this year. Together, they raised six children and were blessed with 12 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. John’s strong devotion and loyalty to his family will always be remembered by his loved ones. He and Mary Ann attended countless sporting events and extra curriculars participated in by their children and grandchildren. A man of few words, John often simply spoke with his presence. His memory and delightful sense of humor will be forever cherished by his loving family and many friends.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Cherry and a sister, Patricia Ann Cherry.

Survivors include the love of his life, Mary Ann Cherry; children, John (Mary Ann), James, Jeffrey (the late Cindy), Brian (Rita), Patrick (Kim), Elizabeth (Mitch) Yoho; grandchildren, Michael Cherry, Emily Cherry, Joseph Cherry, Nicole Linehan, Keith Cherry, Whitney Cherry, Brian Cherry II, Steven Cherry, Patrick Cherry, Jack Cherry, David Yoho, Matthew Yoho; 7 great grandchildren.
