Mary Ann Thorne Collins, 84, of Avon, Indiana, passed away on January 18, 2023. Mary Ann was born on November 13, 1938 in Hazleton, Indiana, to the late Henry Allen ‘Pete’ Thorne & Mary Lois (Manning)Thorne.
Mary Ann was a graduate of Hazleton High School and Vincennes University where she studied nursing. After raising her five children, she enrolled at I.U.P.U.I. where she completed her Bachelor’s in Science and a Master’s in Psychology from Purdue.
A lifelong volunteer, she served as room mother in multiple schools, as PTO president, scout leader, literacy facilitator, and audience member alongside the many hours she cheerfully gave to the Hendricks County Democrats. Mary Ann was a county chairperson, fundraiser, and dedicated poll worker who looked forward to every election and an opportunity to further democracy.
Prior to her retirement, Mary Ann was employed with the State of Indiana where she was a union steward with the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Workers(AFCSME) representing workers who sought pay equity resulting in the largest raise Indiana State employees ever received. As a medical surveyor, she was part of the federal team assigned to investigating and documenting abuses of adults with disabilities at New Castle State Developmental Center which led to its closure.
Mary Ann enjoyed spending time with her family who remember her as a smart, devoted woman who never backed away from a fight and as a welcoming host for gatherings of family and friends who came for fun, excellent food like her apple cake and lively conversation.
Mary Ann is survived by her loving children; Carey Collins, Amy (Mike) Rusher, Christopher (Leann) Collins, Eric (Cindy) Collins, and Andrea (James) Turner, grandchildren; Rigdzin Pema Collins, Cory Rusher, Eric J. Collins, and Colin Turner, along with great-grandchild; Leyton Turner, siblings; John Thorne and Emily (Roger) Levesque as well as her nieces, nephew, and cousins.
Mary Ann is preceded in death by her grandson; Cliff Rusher.
A private family Celebration of Life service will take place at a later date in Hazleton, Indiana. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation to your local public library.
